About the Institute

Our Mission
A Joint Institute at Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) and the University of Notre Dame (ND), the Institute for Theoretical Sciences (ITS) promotes theoretical research by attracting internationally recognized leaders, junior researchers and graduate students in selected areas of basic and applied theoretical sciences, and by providing them with the opportunity to pursue research in the international and intellectually stimulating environments at both the University and at Argonne. The Institute cooperates with all Notre Dame departments and ANL divisions, which pursue research in theoretical sciences. Furthermore, the ITS coordinates its activities with other domestic and international academic institutions and promotes and encourages the participation of underrepresented groups, such as women and minority scientists, at the highest levels of academia and research.
